Understanding ADHD in Children and Teens
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts focus, behavior, and impulse control. The symptoms typically begin before the age of 12, but ADHD can persist into adulthood. This evaluation process helps parents gain clarity on their child’s challenges, including struggles with attention, impulse control, and academic performance. I use a compassionate approach to ensure both you and your child feel supported every step of the way.
The ADHD Evaluation Process
First Appointment
Conducted via telehealth, this session lasts about one hour. We’ll gather background information from you as a parent, discuss your child’s symptoms, and address any concerns. For children, parents attend the intake session. Teens will participate in the intake as well.
Second Appointment
This is an in-person appointment at the Bend, OR office, lasting about two hours. During this time, I will work one-on-one with your child or teen, conducting assessments and activities to better understand their ADHD symptoms.
Third Appointment
Conducted via telehealth and lasting about 50 minutes, we’ll review the assessment report, discuss the diagnosis, and go over recommendations for next steps and a treatment plan. Parents attend the follow-up appointment, but teens are encouraged to join.

Please bring copies of your child’s report cards, standardized testing results, previous evaluations, and any teacher feedback to the appointment.

Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and takes any prescribed medications (except stimulant medications) as directed. Please avoid sugary or high-carb foods before the appointment to ensure your child stays focused and alert.

Yes, it’s normal for children to feel some anxiety before an evaluation. Dr. Fischer will work to make your child feel as comfortable as possible throughout the process, offering breaks if needed and checking in frequently to ensure they’re not overwhelmed.

Explain to your child that the evaluation will involve fun activities like puzzles, pictures, and blocks to help us understand how they learn best. Reassure them that there are no “right or wrong” answers and avoid using the word "test" to help reduce any anxiety.
