Understanding ADHD in Children and Teens

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention, behavior, and impulse control. Symptoms of ADHD typically emerge before age 12 but can continue into adulthood. Children with ADHD may struggle in school, face difficulties in relationships, and experience challenges in daily tasks. Through a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Fischer helps identify the source of these struggles and provides tailored recommendations for improvement.

What to Expect During Your Child’s ADHD Evaluation

First Appointment

Conducted in-person, this session lasts about three hours. The first hour is dedicated to gathering background information and discussing symptoms with parents. Teens are included in the intake session. After that, Dr. Fischer will work one-on-one with your child to conduct assessments and activities to better understand their symptoms.

Second Appointment

Conducted via telehealth, we’ll review the assessment report, discuss the diagnosis, and go over recommendations for next steps and a treatment plan. Only parents attend the follow-up appointment for younger children, but teens are encouraged to join.

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts focus, behavior, and impulse control. It typically starts before the age of 12 but can persist into adulthood, affecting school, relationships, and work.
Children with ADHD may have trouble maintaining attention, staying organized, following instructions, and completing tasks. Other symptoms include impulsivity, restlessness, fidgeting, and difficulty waiting their turn.
The evaluation occurs over two appointments: the first in-person for gathering background information and conducting assessments with your child, and the second via telehealth to review the results, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.
Please bring copies of your child’s academic history (such as report cards and transcripts) and any previous evaluations or assessments.
Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a nourishing breakfast before the evaluation. Avoid sugary or high-carb foods, as they can cause sluggishness. If your child is taking ADHD medications, please follow your prescribing physician's instructions regarding medication on the day of the evaluation.
It’s completely normal to feel anxious before the evaluation. Dr. Fischer will make every effort to help your child feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the process. Breaks will be offered as needed.
When talking to your child, reassure them that the evaluation will involve fun activities, such as puzzles and games, to help us understand how they learn best. Avoid using the word “test” to help reduce any anxiety. Let them know that there are no “right or wrong” answers during the activities.
