Understanding Learning Disorders

Learning disorders, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, can make it challenging to learn new concepts and perform tasks that come more easily to others. Whether in school or at work, these difficulties can lead to frustration and feelings of inadequacy. Through a psychoeducational assessment, I help identify the areas where you or your child may be struggling, and we work together to create a path toward success. A diagnosis can provide the clarity needed for accessing additional support and accommodations, both academically and professionally.

What to Expect During Your Learning Disorder Evaluation

First Appointment

This in-person appointment lasts up to five and a half hours. The first hour will focus on gathering background information from you about symptoms and struggles you’ve noticed. This portion is for parents only when assessing children. For teens, they are included in the intake. After the intake, I will work one-on-one with you or your child, conducting a variety of cognitive and academic activities, questionnaires, and other assessments.

Second Appointment

This appointment is conducted via telehealth and lasts about 50 minutes. We will review the completed report, discuss the diagnosis, and go over next steps and treatment recommendations. A copy of the report will be provided to you after this appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dyslexia impacts reading and language skills, dysgraphia affects writing and spelling, and dyscalculia causes difficulties with math. These disorders can make learning slower and more challenging, but a proper diagnosis can help identify strategies for success.

  • Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before the assessment. Avoid sugary or high-carb foods that could make them feel sluggish. For adults, make sure you’re well-rested and prepared to focus during the assessment.

  • Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and takes any prescribed medications (except stimulant medications) as directed. Please avoid sugary or high-carb foods before the appointment to ensure your child stays focused and alert.

  • Yes, it’s normal to feel some anxiety. I will work to make you or your child feel comfortable during the process. I will check in frequently to ensure that you are not feeling overwhelmed and offer breaks as needed.

  • During the first hour of the appointment, parents will meet with Dr. Fischer without their child. This gives you the opportunity to freely discuss your child’s challenges. If your child is over 12, they can participate in this portion of the appointment as well. For younger children, please arrange for someone to care for them during the intake, as the evaluation can take several hours.
